About

At Small Flock Yarns, we believe the best wool tells a story — of landscape, care, and craftsmanship. Every skein we produce begins with a fleece from a small, well-loved flock in the Sussex countryside — including our own sheep, raised at the foot of the South Downs in Poynings.

We work closely with other smallholders across Sussex to source high-quality British wool in limited batches, ensuring each collection reflects the season, the land, and the animals it came from. Some of our blends also include locally sourced alpaca, adding softness and variety while staying true to our local roots.

Our yarns are made predominantly from Romney sheep, a traditional British breed well known for its lustrous, long-stapled fleece. Romney wool is a favourite among hand knitters for its durability, bounce, and excellent stitch definition, making it ideal for everything from textured patterns to everyday garments. Their fleece has just the right balance of softness and strength — perfect for yarns that are both beautiful and long-lasting.

The people behind Small Flock Yarns are wife and husband, Natalie and Julian, a duo combining rural know-how with design expertise.

Natalie is a hand knitwear designer with over a decade of experience writing patterns for knitters of all levels. After gaining her City & Guilds certificate in Hand Knitwear Design, she developed a deep understanding of what makes a yarn truly knittable — and works directly with Diamond Fibres, a local mill in Horam, to produce yarns with excellent handle, structure, and natural charm.

Julian studied Countryside Management at Plumpton College, where he honed the practical skills needed to care for sheep and manage land sustainably. He now tends our flock in Poynings, ensuring the animals are healthy, happy, and respected — because good wool starts with good welfare.

Together, we’re proud to offer yarns that are local, traceable, and made with purpose — ideal for hand knitting, steeped in Sussex character, and crafted in small batches so no two dye lots are ever quite the same.

Thank you for supporting small-scale, sustainable British wool. Every stitch you knit helps keep traditional skills, rare breeds, and rural craftsmanship alive. We’re so glad you’re here. 🧶
