Meet the Flocks!
POYNINGS FLOCK
Nestled at the foot of the South Downs in the picturesque village of Poynings, our little small flock looked after by husband and wife team, Julian and Natalie (the founders of Small Flock Yarns), began as a starter flock of 7 sheep that were from Wallis Farm who are based just up the road in Pyecombe.
Our little flock orginally consisted of 3 x whethers that are pure New Zealand Romney, 4 x ewes (one is pure New Zealand Romney and two of them are New Zealand Romney x Texel mix). The final ewe is a Blue Beltex called Lolly and she is the brown/black sheep in the above photo.
Since then, our ewes have had some lambs this year and we also added a couple of Kent Romney sheep from Susanna at Barcombe Romneys so our little flock has now grown to 19 sheep.
WALLIS FLOCK
Wallis Farm are based in Pyecombe, Sussex in the Southdowns National Park and the flocks there are looked after by Sue and Graham. They have a variety of animals on their small holding including sheep and 2 x Alpacas.
Their alpacas, Bert and Ernie can be seen in the above photo. We're fortunate to have Bert's fleece (the brown alpaca) in our current batch of the Wallis x Diamond Flock yarn that is currently for sale on our website.
Sue and Graham have also recently set up glamping on their small holding so you could have their small flock as your neighbours during your stay!
Here is a link to their glamping website:
DIAMOND FLOCK
The diamond flock are a variety of colours of Kent Romney sheep that have been raised from Roger’s small flock at Diamond Farm in Horam, East Sussex.
This is also where Roger's spinning mill is located, called Diamond Fibres and this is where we have all the small flock fleeces spun.
Our current yarn range includes the diamond flock wool that is from Roger's small flock that has been worsted spun from his grey Kent Romney fleeces. Here is photo of his little flock of grey romneys:
We also have combined his black Kent Romney Fleeces with Bert's Alpaca Fleece in the Wallis x Diamond yarn that is also available on the website.
If you're based in Sussex and have a small flock of sheep on your small holding and are interested in selling your sheep's fleeces to us so we can help support your shearing costs whilst we can add some new hand knitting wools to our Small Flock Yarns range, please email us at hello@smallflockyarns.com or message us via our contact page as we'd love to hear from you!
